I didn't think about it at the time, but being a gnome and having +15 engineering skill probably helped quite a lot in getting to 300 skill in engineering more quickly.

The Gadgetzan transporter becomes less useful once the reputation is gained to make use of the Shattrath Keepers of Time representative's teleport ability; the rocket boots are like a rogue's sprint; there is an invincibility belt, but rogues get a similar ability at high level; there's a gadget that allows invisibility, but rogues get stealth anyway; the parachute cloak has a slight advantage over a rogue's safe fall ability, but nothing significant in most uses.

There are a couple of neat devices that can be made, and there are the aeroplanes as flying and swift flying mounts, but apart from the AoE explosives it seems that from a rogue's point-of-view engineering is a way to make a class more rogue-like.

I chose Gnomish engineering, I forget why but I think I had a motivation at the time. I think it was because I was under the impression Goblin engineering generally made items that exploded and I wanted more interesting creations than those. After choosing Scryers and Aldors badly twice before you'd think I'd research these decisions, but I am too impetuous it seems.

I have picked up a couple of Gnomish engineering schematics, notably the world enlarger and the Gadgetzan transporter. The world enlarger is cute but useless, and the Gadgetzan transporter would be handy if it didn't require some stupidly-hard-to-get cores of earth.

The next batch of Gnomish schematics I can get are at skill level 325, but none are terribly exciting until the leather goggles that I need to get a skill of 375 to make. It looks like engineering will remain mostly useless for Knifey.

Have you looked into specialising into Goblin or Gnomish engineering yet?

Some fun gadgets to play with once you've grabbed one of those. If you haven't looked into it yet, it's worth reading up on what each offers.
